Plan Your Visit

If you’re planning on attending an event at the Barrel House or simply visiting us for a drink with friends, please take a moment to familiarise yourself with the following useful information.

How to find us

The Barrel House Ballroom and Totnes Brewing Co can be found on the corner of High Street and Castle Street, standing in the shadow of Totnes Castle and just a few yards from the Market Square in the town centre.

Our address is: 59 High St, Totnes, Devon, TQ9 5PB

Public Transport

Totnes Train Station is just 10 minutes walk from the venue. The station is situated on the mainline from London to Penzance in Cornwall and is served by routes from across the country.

Trains leaving Totnes, travelling towards Plymouth and Exeter and beyond, run until around midnight from Monday to Friday. Note that services usually finish earlier at the weekends so please always check train times on the day.

Totnes is served by bus links from local towns and villages as well as National Express coaches. Note that buses do not run late into the evenings so make sure to check departure times and plan ahead.

You can plan your journey using public transport at Trainline.

Taxis

There is taxi rank at The Plains at the bottom of Fore Street, 10 minutes walk down the hill from the venue. Taxis will pick up from outside the venue but we advise you to pre-book in advance as they are often booked up, especially at evenings and weekends.

Accessibility

Please note that the Barrel House Ballroom is on the first floor and currently, the only access is via stairs.

There are separate male and female toilets on the first floor and a gender-neutral toilet on the ground floor. (Please note that whilst COVID restrictions remain in place, the ground floor toilet is for staff use only but can be opened to the public on request).

There is very limited seating in the venue, however, we can reserve a seat for those that are unable to stand for events. We cannot guarantee that the stage will be visible.

We are looking at solutions to make events at the venue more accessible to all on an ongoing basis. Cost and logistics (we are a listed building) are a huge challenge in this respect but not one that we believe is insurmountable.

If you have any questions or concerns about attending an event at the Barrel House, please contact us prior to the event to discuss.

Age restrictions

Age restrictions vary for each event depending on content so please check listings.

As a licenced venue, all under 18’s must be accompanied by an adult unless specified.

Please check with the venue if you plan to bring a guest who is under the age of 18. For ticketed events, all children aged 3 and above must have a ticket.

Photography & filming

Our photography and filming policy varies according to the event. Artists may request that there is no photography or filming and in this case we ask the audience to respect this. There will be signage prior to entering the venue if this is the case. Photography on mobile phones and compact cameras is permitted, without flash and for personal use only.

Larger cameras (SLRs with detachable lenses, for example) may only be used by those employed by the venue or the artist. Please note that most gigs and events will have some element of filming/photography taking place for use by the venue and/or artist. If you do not wish to be filmed please let the camera operator(s) know.

Food & Drink

Totnes Brewing Co is located on the ground floor of the venue and you are able to take drinks purchased here up to the Ballroom.

Open from midday on weekends and 5PM on weekdays, this is the perfect place to meet friends for a pre-gig drink – serving craft beer, brewed on-site, as well as a large range of other craft beers, ciders, wines and spirits.

The Totnes Brewing Co does not serve food but you are able to bring your own in with you and there are several local takeaways serving pizza, Indian, Asian, Tapas, Pie and Fish and chips. Please note that we do not hold any condiments or cutlery and you may only bring in food if you are purchasing drinks from the bar. There is a beer garden for warm sunny evenings. Our favourite places to eat in or get takeaway from are:

Room 101 Pizza
Pie Street

Little Asia
Café Mumbai
Rumour Restaurant and Bar
The Bull Inn

There are plenty of cafes open during the day throughout the town centre. Plus the markets on Friday and Saturdays are worth a visit with several stalls selling hot food and snacks.

Ticket enquiries

Tickets for our events are normally handled by our third-party ticket partners. If you have bought tickets for an event at TBHB, please contact the ticket seller directly in the event of any ticket issues or questions.

Health & Safety

We take the health and safety of our customers, staff and visitors very seriously and work with local police, industry colleagues and members of security staff regularly.

On weekend gig nights we employ SIA trained door staff as a safety precaution, however, Totnes is a very safe town and the venue does not have the edgy vibe that some venues in bigger towns and cities can have. If at any point you feel unsafe or unwell, please speak to one of our staff or SIA door staff. The building is covered in most areas by CCTV. Random bag searches may be made by male and female door staff – please do not bring in bottles, cans, weapons, food etc into the venue.

We do not tolerate any kind of bullying or abusive behaviour towards anybody. If there is any behaviour that makes you feel uncomfortable, please report this to the duty manager via a member of staff.

We also have a zero-tolerance policy on drugs and anyone carrying or using drugs on the premises will be asked to leave with no re-admittance.

What else?

There is no cloakroom facility – lost property will be held for one month and then disposed of appropriately.

Dogs are allowed into The Totnes Brewing Co on leads but not in the venue (except for service dogs/animals by arrangement.

Stag and hen parties are permitted by prior arrangement only. Please contact us to discuss.
